Other Lives hail from the remote US town of Stillwater, Oklahoma which is surrounded by untouched plains. Their music reflects the austerity and remote dustbowl-esque southern gothic imagery that has influenced their gifted singer/composer and multi-instrumentalist bandleader, Jesse Tabish. Tamer Animals is their second release but their first to be released in the UK.
Their latest music video ‘For 12’ opens to a scene in space and a dark triangular slab viewed from a space station…you may be forgiven for expecting the opening fanfare from Also sprach Zarathustra which was made famous by the film ‘2001 a space odyssey.’ The similarities don’t end there but I won’t spoil it as you can watch it below along with a great acoustic set for their track E Minor:
Tamer Animals is released on 29th August which promises
an opening salvo of ambitious scope: densely textured and uncompromisingly sophisticated, yet instantly appealing and alluringly mysterious.
Produced by the band themselves and mixed by Beck’s long-time drummer Joey Waronker, Tamer Animals was written and recorded at Other Lives’ own studio over a period of sixteen months. Interweaving layer upon layer of intricately winding and pulsing orchestrations, Tamer Animals’ eleven tracks enfold listeners in a bounteous panoply of melodies and textures reminiscent of Brian Wilson’s daring Smile period.
Fresh from recent US tours with The National and The Decemberists and confirmed for a US September tour with Bon Iver, Other Lives will soon make their eagerly anticipated UK concert debut. With their music already frequenting XFM and 6 Music playlists as well as getting support from Radio 1, Other Lives have also been offered sessions on every major national radio station and will be playing UK festival slots on their first ever trip over here.
