Greylag was one of three bands/ artists that I came across recently who all share a connection, I will be mentioning the other two very soon. Greylag are based in portland, Oregon and are the brainchild of Andrew Stonestreet and Daniel Dixon who first began collaborating from afar, after a chance meeting in Kentucky. Eventually they both moved to Portland, Oregon and began piecing together what would come to be known as Greylag, with the help of the variously talented Brady Hutton Swan and Mark Robertson.
In the Spring of 2010, Greylag crossed paths with producer Sebastian Rogers, who invited them into his home and helped record their first album, The Only Way To Kill You. Attempting to capture the youthful energy and excitement of the young band, they decided to record the album almost entirely live, giving a freshness to their mature and thoughtful songs.
Though each member originally hails from a different part of the country, they all shared a common love for the atmosphere and culture of the Pacific Northwest, now happily calling Portland their home. A new album is due out very soon.
Their music is probably best described as indie folk. It offers a beautiful stripped back sound that for some reason reminds me of Lost in the Trees, the symphonic folk creation of Ari Picker. Of course the sonic layers are different but the sentiment and feel is similar. You can hear for yourself:
