My Room in the Trees is the latest release from The Innocence Mission. The lushly orchestrated opener Rain makes a grand emotional impact with soulful violin playing from guest musician Gina Di Carlo. A perfect choice for a gently charged album that looks at life through a prism of memories as well the childs eye, a retrospective peek through the key-hole to those long lost memories of an everday walk home from school.
Glittering fragments of cosy memories make this an uplifting and visual listening experience that locks into and entwine with your own.
“in our raincoats, in the afternoon” / “Flying down lanes, bicycles red and blue”
The natural and organic acoustic space created by The innocence Mission is a very solitary but warm place to be in. Violin, upright bass, baritone and nylon string guitars offer a gentle ambience to soak up Karen McCullough’s dreamy voice. Guitarist Don Peris and bassist Mike Bitts have known eachother since they were seven and Karen met the pair during high school. This bond has given them a symbiotic nature to their music where each player fits the other perfectly…this can be heard throughout the album and especially on Spring and Rhode Island.
It is the sum of all things that makes this such a beautiful album, Karen’s lyrics are poetic and graceful and when combined with the albums unhurried nature make it an exceptional and beautiful warm sound to experience which was no doubt heightened by the decision to record most of the album in the Peris’ home.
A highly recommended album!
