Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three have been forging a growing fan base in Europe thanks to the attention of many promoters and enthusiastic supporters such as Carsten Panduro, the festival director of Tønder Festival (Denmark) which has been running since 1975. Carsten joined Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three during their UK debut appearance last year at various venues including Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Open House Festival, Belfast where I met them both. After chatting with Pokey for a while it felt like talking to a man from another era. The man lives and dreams about the old rag-time blues and country swing era. After a brief history on the music over a Guiness chatting about Gus Cannon, Jimmie Rogers and Blind Blake I found myself getting equally enthused about their sound.
It felt like they were really cracking the edge of Europe back then and now with an established fan base and a new album titled Middle of Everywhere, which has soared to the Number 3 position on the Euro Americana Chart for June, the boys look set to make a big impact on this new tour so you’d better book those tickets quick!
It’s not only in Europe that their reputation is building, Jack White of The White Stripes has just recorded and produced a single for the band on his own Third Man Records label, which will no doubt lead to a lot more worthy attention.
