Kill it Kid are a cross between Johnny Cash, The Black Keys and The White Stripes; taking inspiration from the likes of Blind Willie McTell, Son House, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, it’s hard to believe they come from Bath!
Their latest EP, Pray On Me, marries the detroit bass line with the raw gospel blues of the delta along with a great big handful of grit. Marc Jones (Drums), Chris Turpin (Vocals and Guitar), Stephanie Ward (Vocals and Piano) and Adam Timmins (Bass) make up the great big sound known as Kill it Kid. The music feels like it is soaked in dustbowl history, from Steinbeck to hobos, evangelical preachers to whisky soaked bluesmen. Just to make sure you know where they’re coming from the title track opens to an Alan Lomax recording of J.H. Terrell hotting up for one of his evangelical tent revival sermons followed by an awesome opening by Stephanie Ward who can nail the blues to the mast just as well as Turpin. Also, some great production thanks to Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Grace Jones, Florence and the Machine).
The title track is a sign of things to come and I’m personally looking forward to an album. This British act will give The Black Keys a good run for their money…you can wave goodbye to their past over-cliched neo-folk stamp.
