As daffodils bloom and lambs gambol in the fields, there can be no better time to announce that the next single to be taken from Erland & The Carnival’s new album, Nightingale, is “Springtime.” But as is a theme of the new album, this is a song with a dark heart, a tale of escape propelled by minor chords, expectant drums and cascading synths. And as with many Erland & The Carnival songs, its root is in the folk music of the past.
“The melody and lyric is adapted from a Ralph Vaughan Williams-collected song called In The Springtime,” says guitarist Simon Tong. “We looked to contemporise the original melody with this track as the original felt a bit overblown in a band setting,” adds drummer David Nock.
