In November last year we introduced you to Julianna Barwick by way a couple of videos of her performing. Using mainly just her voice and a loop station she has taken a-capella music to another dimension. She is back with a new album titled Magic Place.
Magic Place continues this theme but with more backing instrumentation. The results are very visual, mixing harmony and intricate layers of sound to create warmth, intimacy and gently rising ecstasy…like a soundtrack for an existential portrait of an artist in work.

Inspired by childhood memories of church singing where the sound and different tones of voices filled a huge space she recreates a similar atmosphere.
You could really hear all the layers, harmonies, rounds, the men and the women, the claps… everything. Some of those hymns are so beautiful.
There is a great comfort in listening to her music, the absence of words make it a primal and unbiased experience where both sound and silence intermingle in complete divinity.
