A Rookery hail from Calder Valley, West Yorkshire. Their new EP: Nabby Nook has a breadth of influences ranging from dark folk rock with a gothic twist to more subtle swaying charms reminiscent of early psych-folk. In all, they have something a bit different that made them stand out for us!
Background
You could call them a progressive modern folk band, though many musical threads run through the groundings of A Rookery . This is reflected in the different musical heritage and taste of band members, Gareth Scott (vocals, guitars) and Jenny Bromley (vocals, guitars) Simon Chantler (fiddle mandolin and more), Anthony ‘Smudge’ Smith (bass, melodica, guitars and more), and Roger Burnett (drums and percussions).
You want a description of our sound? It can be papery light and cold as frost, sometimes thick and treacly, with vinegar and molasses. A description of our songs? From a modern take on a traditional bower song, to songs of want and redemption. We do write and play with specific people and circumstances in mind, sometimes we are trying to be seducers, other times aggressors. We really are trying to move you.
