Magpie is the debut release from artist Tess. The album has been a year in making and it leaves the impression that he left no page unturned. He has given this album 110% and his hard work has certainly paid off. The results are an intimate refelection of the inner joys and struggles. A wonderfully atmospheric album where the spaces are equally considered alongside the textured acoustic layers.
Like most artists, Tess built his confidence beyond self reflection and creation over his guitar to sharing those personal moments through a growing number of gigs and performances. Things took a lucky turn following a chance encounter with a cellist in a café. It was through her that he was introduced to producer and strings arranger Howard Gott. With Howards help and guidance, a new sound evolved which incoporated a greater depth to his music. The long awaited results are his debut album Magpie.
Magpie has a rich texture and depth thanks to some beautiful acoustic arrangements on cello, violin and guitar. Parts compare to Ray Lamontagne, the opening drums and sweeping violin on Save me from Myself are reminiscent of Gossip and Grain, an album that Howard Gott worked on. For a debut release there is an unusual great depth of maturity to Tess’s singing and songwriting.
There are many high points to this album, The Warren is great classic songwriting with beautiful female harmony. The cello accompanying Tess’s guitar playing creates a very sensual atmosphere. River is full of imagery crafted by the lyrics and the most beautiful musical arrangements. The opening is haunting, there is also a great emotional weight to this song that you can’t help but get wrapped up in.
Magpie has the making of a classic, and it grows on you still further after each listen. A beautiful and lovingly crafted album from a humble soul. Fans of Alexi Murdoch and Ray lamontagne will love it!
