This Saturday, 15th January, sees the return to Chepstow of the annual Wassail & Mari Lwyd. This unique annual event is arranged by that hellrasing border morris side known as The Widders.
The Wassail & Mari Lwyd combines the traditions of English Wassail with the Welsh Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare) and takes place in various locations around Chepstow from 4:00pm until late. The fun starts down at the Riverbank with various entertainments and dancing, followed at 6:30pm by the Welsh/English meeting on The Border (Old Iron Bridge). The joint celebrations then move around lower Chepstow until 8pm when the evening is rounded off with a Ceilidh in the Drill Hall off Lower Church Street, featuring the exciting Juice Ceilidh Band, whilst around the block at the Chepstow Castle Inn there will be an Open Mic music session.
Come along, it’s a great day out for grown-ups and kids with great sessions and a good ole dance!
Session musicians and members of the public can find more details here.
The Widders are also organising a dance weekend from Fri 1- Sun 3 Jul 2011. This annual event involves performances by 25 Morris teams and many musical events all over Chepstow, including a Ceilidh, concerts, sessions and workshops.
Always good fun…good ale an all!
