Minneapolis chamber-folk sextet Dark Dark Dark embarked on a winter tour this week. The tour, which runs until the end of the month covers France, Belgium and much of the UK.
Beginning as a collaborative project between multi-instrumentalists Nona Marie Invie and Marshall LaCount in 2006, the October release of Wild Go, marks the development of the group in sound and style over the past four years.
Blending an array of influences from folk music to jazz, Americana and pop the fusion creates a kaleidoscopic sound as colourful as it is diverse. Full of liveliness and longing, portent and passion.
The ability to lift sounds and instrumentation from so many different corners of the globe and places in time and transport them succiently to the modern day lending them a freshness and originality beyond their peers marks Dark Dark Dark as ones to watch. “A Cloud Story” is a perfect piece of Eastern inspired folk, laced as it is with accordion and the clattering of symbols, while “Wild Goose Chase” is supposedly a musical response to “Rambling Woman”, the classic bluegrass track by Hazel Dickens.
My reponse – catch one of these shows…or a number of them!
