As mentioned on their main site The Decemberists are now well underway recording their sixth album at a barn in an undisclosed location near Portland. Their management suggested they provide some photos of their endeavours so they provided this interesting photo of a strange looking cross dressing fairy:
Aside from this great prancing fairy snap they have let out further snippits along the way including this recent gem on twitter indicating that Gillian Welch will guest on the album:

Gillian Welch is touring with The Dave Rawlings Machine in the UK during September, including The Open House Festival!
They’re at the stage of selecting album names so its release can’t be that far away. February 2011 has been mentioned on the REM website as their guitarist, Peter Buck, joined them for a days work in the barn:

Peter appeared on three songs, which are slated to appear on the group’s next Capitol album, due in February. Singer-songwriter Colin Meloy acknowledged R.E.M. as being an inspiration on some of the band’s new material. Producer Tucker Martine, who worked with R.E.M. last May on demos for its forthcoming album, helmed the sessions.
