Allysen Callery has been playing on Folk Radio UK for quite a while now. We were bowled over by her album Hobgoblin’s Hat. Her music and lyrics are other-worldy and spellbinding. We were over-joyed therefore when she agreed to record this session which she stretched to five tracks instead of the usual four (a great bonus). It was recorded late at night by Myles Baer and she tells us they had a great time recording it. For those familiar with Allysen’s music you will be in for a treat as you hear the raw beauty of these familiar tracks. Newcomers will no doubt fall under her spell as we did!
A bit of background: Allysen Callery was born Toby Allysen Williams to teenage parents in September of 1967, just outside of San Francisco ,where psychedelic images & music abounded.
Growing up she lived in many different places, including Taiwan~ where she learned to speak.
Orphaned at age 14, she was given her father’s Martin classical guitar.
A self- taught player, she developed her own picking style over time~ using thumb & 3 fingers.
“Allysen Callery might be the Tim Burton of folk music, her dark songs often transporting us to somewhere otherworldly. Highly recommended” – Call It Folk (May 01, 2010)
“The only aspect of Allysen Callery’s talents more impressive than her nimble, nylon-string finger-picking is her unmistakable voice.” Chris Conti /The Providence Phoenix
New projects are on the horizon, talks with European labels are in progress, & her collaborations with Myles Baer of Black Hole Sound Studios will continue onward.
