Jamaica’s legendary Jolly Boys are rapidly becoming a festival favourite this year. You only need to check the latest videos doing the rounds to see why.
They will release a new album, ‘Great Expectation’ on Wall Of Sound Records on 20th September 2010. It’s a collaborative project between Geejam’s Jon Baker and Wall Of Sound’s Mark Jones and the result is 12 stunning interpretations of contemporary songs given a mento makeover. They will also be in the UK for a series of rare UK dates throughout the summer months.
‘Rehab’, the first single to be taken from the Jolly Boys’ forthcoming album. It’s a fantastic version of the song made famous by Amy Winehouse, uniquely interpreted in the mento music style and a perfect accompaniment to the heady days of summer. And their version has Amy’s full seal of approval – she’s a huge fan of the band and went to Jamaica recently to see them play.
Here they are jamming outside a hotel before the Cardiff Big Weekend covering Johnny Cash’s classic Ring of Fire. Check the final comments from the guest Scots bass player. Personally I think they’d go down a treat at Celtic Connections! Not that I’m biased or nothing but they’d be well looked after…go on!:
