The Lunar Society (moseley Folk Festival) Present: Goodnight Lenin + The Old Dance School
on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 at London Passing Clouds. Dalston 7:30pm – 12am
The Magpie’s Nest Collective welcome The Lunar Society to London to showcase two of the hottest new modern folk bands from the Midlands Goodnight Lenin and The Old Dance School. The Lunar Society is a regular contemporary folk and acoustic music event organised by the people behind the sell out and ever popular Moseley Folk Festival in Birmingham.
Goodnight Lenin caught the attention of audiences in Birmingham after releasing a YouTube video of a simple acoustic performance in which they sat perched on the counter tops of their kitchen. The group attribute their sound to Bob Dylan and Elvis Perkins, mixing folk with a heavy American influence. With the focus on lyrics; this bright young five piece combine guitar, bass, mandolin, and drums with beautiful harmonies to make their own form of modern folk. 2010 is set to be a great year for the band as they will be supporting First Aid Kit on the Birmingham leg of the duo’s UK tour before releasing their first limited edition single in the summer. Despite this, Goodnight Lenin can still be found performing amongst the pots and pans in kitchens.
The Old Dance School formed in 2006 and rehearsed in the garden of the old Betty Fox School of Ballet in Birmingham, where lies the origins of their name. Three years, 30,000 miles and several trips to A&E later, The Old Dance School’s distinctive concoction of explosive, white knuckle folk is blowing up a storm on the festival scene. This twinkly-eyed six piece band features duelling fiddles and hair-raising world percussion evoking images of wind-swept headlands, witches and wild vertical adventures. Their first album ‘Based on a True Story’ was released in 2008 on their own label and was championed by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris.

Ade Edmondson And The Bad Shepherds
on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 at Tring Court Theatre 7.30pm
Please note this is a Standing Event only. Limited seating can be arranged for disabled or infirm. The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise – it works! Classic numbers by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, even Kraftwerk all get the celtic folk treatment. It’s all presented with humour and much welly – energy with finesse, rather than just thrash, despite Adrian Edmondson’s protestations that he is the best (and only) ‘thrash’ mandolin player in the world… Featuring Adrian Edmondson, Maartin Allcock (Fairport Convention & Jethro Tull), Troy Donockley (renowned for his work with Iona, Maddy Prior and Midge Ure) and Andy Dinan.

Annabelle Chvostek
on Sat, 12 Jun 2010 at South Molton The George Hotel 8.30pm
Annabelle joined the Wailin’ Jennys in 2004, the rest of the world found out what a grassroots network of Canadian roots fans had known for several years: that Chvostek is a formidable songwriter, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, and a fearless and innovative artist whose beguiling left-of-centre compositions straddle the divide between mainstream roots and acoustic indie pop.
Chvostek’s songs were repeatedly singled out by critics as highlights of the Jennys’ Juno-nominated CD, Firecracker. Her opening song “Devil’s Paintbrush Road” was the #1 song at US folk radio in 2006. It remained at #3 in 2007. Her latest solo release is receiveing similar accolades, nominated for Contemporary Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and as a top Canadian album finishing #2 for January 2009 (Folkdj-l playlists).
After two and a half years of recording and touring with the Jennys’, highlights of which included several appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, performing at New York’s legendary Town Hall and singing on the Juno Awards telecast, Chvostek has released her much-anticipated solo album, Resilience. She receives consistent rave reviews around the world and inspires audiences wherever she goes.
